I think one of the things that we need to focus on in DNN is usability. I have been doing a lot of reading lately and have a lot of work to do on my own modules, but things like the Login page, Sign Up form/UI process could be improved massively with relatively little effort and improve thousands of sites around the world instantly.

I really hope some funding is put towards a usability study or testing and resource is assigned to this area speciifcally.

For those who want to improve their own sites/apps/mods: some web usability books that I have found extremely beneficial:

Steven Krug's "Don't make me think"

I've got some more books on order which I'll let you know abuot if they're good...

and some links:

Smashing Magazine - I recently found this and it is a GOLDMINE of usability tips. For example, this article studies the top 50 blogs (not webapps unfortunately) in the world and shows the % of things like where the ads are, av font sizes, how long the sign up form is and what to call your Register link...  usability gold...

I completely agree, I've been working on a few shopping cart websites and came across a very interesting article a couple months ago. The $300 Million Button article from the User Interface Engineering website basically says changing "Register" to "Continue" resulted in "the number of customers purchasing went up by 45%. The extra purchases resulted in an extra $15 million the first month. For the first year, the site saw an additional $300,000,000."

It's amazing how powerful a single word can be, Lets hope we can all get a boost this large!

I suggest you help us improve it - do you have anything to contribute? What is your skill set?

That's a great idea Alex.. I never thought of that!

My skill set includes spotting useless comments.

*sigh* - there's way too much bickering on these forums these days ;)

Anyway, I also want to say that Facebook has set an informal standard on usability and user expectations. I am constantly getting asked why my site doesn't do XYZ, "like Facebook"....

Our core UI is way too outdated....  things you can do now as a site owner to make it better is localise it and make the core messages more user friendly, and replace all the core images (this is another issue, these get over-written on upgrades, we need to have a custom folder per portal). But this is a little off topic, sorry...

This is another link from the same site about some site builders. I consider them some of DNN's competitors. Once I have seen their UI's, I felt that they are Windows and DNN is like DOS.  Some of them are pretty slick and fast.

 - One area in DNN where a drap & drop experience helps is selecting a module and dropping it into a pane without going through other dropdowns to determine where it needs to go and later if you want to move it to another pane, just drag it to the new pane.

- Some site builders give hints to beginners like putting a "Start Here" balloon tip near the item to add text. In DNN if the user has no idea about the Text/HTML module, they would be at loss. I had new users who where frustrated because they didn't know how to start. I think DNN needs something like an "Add Content" option somewhere visible in the control panel beside being an option in the modules list. Because almost 100% users will be adding content as their first step.

- The module dropdown might need to have categories. As you add mSubmitodules, the list just becomes a long list of modules which might confuse users. Advanced modules need to be in a submenu.

- A UI interface like the ribbon has been pretty common and useful. DNN  could use one.

I understand there are a lot of good UI ideas out there and it would be a major undertaking to implement them in DNN. However adding a little more eye candy, colorful icons, drag & drop & AJAX functionality can make a big difference for non technical users and make DNN more appealing to them.
