Hi,

According to Google Analytics I get about one twentieth the page views that the DNN log reports.  My site is not high volume, so for example Analytics reports 96 page views and the DNN site log reports 1800 over the same time frame.  I've looked at the DNN Detailed Log and whilst there are clearly some requests from spiders, the majority look like human browser traffic to me.

I implemented the Analytics javascript code by pasting it into the skin and the fact that I get some stats suggests that it is correctly implemented.  I only use one skin over the whole site.  I am aware that there are circumstances where the user will see the Admin skin (no Analytics in in that skin) rather than the portal one.  I have very few registered users and I do not believe that visitors seeing the admin skin represents any more than a tiny fragment of traffic.

I would be quite happy to accept some discrepancy between the Google reports and the DNN ones, but a factor of twenty seems too much.

Does anyone have a similar tale to tell?  Even better is there anyone who can claim they have comparable figures between Analytics and the DNN site log?

At the moment I do not know which to believe.

Best wishes,

Google analytics do not have access to all your webpages so there will be difference but not by that much. Also anything that is installed on your server is usually more accurate than Google Anayltics. Also make sure you are not comparing pageview with hits.

Why would analytics not have access?  AIUI when a page is requested javascript (js) on the page (attempts) to contact Google to record the request in analytics.  I can understand that browsers that refuse js would not be able to contact Google.  But browsers that do not accept js do not get on well with most of ASP .Net.

I am not comparing page views with hits.  Again AIUI the DNN log does not record hits.

Anyone else?

We have the similar experience. Usually page views in Google Analysis is one fourth of that in DNN site log and site visits also is 20% lower.

For example if you are logged in and doing Host or Admin task such as tabs, module definations.... etc. Did you install analytics on those pages? How do you count those hits. Many people block javascript, those will not show up analytics either. Many companies install software such as websense that block scipts from loading those do not show up on analytics. There are many more examples like that. I am not saying Google analytics is not good. I use it for all my stats but I also use smarter stats. Google analytics give you certain features and functionalities that are really cool and helpful.

Google also owns urchin stats that you can install on server and that is accurate as it is installed on your server.
