It's really cool to see the tell tale DNN icon on sites as I surf the web. It makes feel good to see how far DNN has grown. But, as a graphic designer it make me cringe. This is as much a part of a site's design as anything else. It is one of the elements that persists even when the user is not on the site. So, why aren't more people using it effectivley?

Well, from my perspective it is because it isn't supported by the core very well.

- It's a manual upload of a file to the file system instead of setting in Site Settings

- Favicons get overwritten on DNN upgrade. :(

So, isn't it about time this small feature get some real attention? What I would like to see is Favicon/Site Icon as a site settings option. Maybe even have a few stock icons availeable in addtition to the DNN icon and the ability to select your own graphic to be used by DNN as the Site Icon. And yes, it should not get overwritten on site upgrade.

(Note: These comments are based on my own experiences. Please let me know if I am missing something.)

Thanks

I'm all for it.  Make sure and add this suggestion to http://support.dotnetnuke.com/ so it gets noticed and implemented.

If you place your favicon in your portal directory (portals/0), then it will not be overwritten on upgrades. DNN draws from the portals directory first, then root.

I don't understand how it can be better supported.

Just upload the favicon.ico file to the Portal root folder.  Not much to it really, and it doesn't get overwritten on DNN Upgrades.

To add in settings etc, really just makes it more complex and adds unneccessary steps when a single upload is all that's required.

I do agree quite a few don't seem to change it... often I come across the default favicon on a DNN site, even ones that have had quite a bit of effort in the design.

It's true, there is not much to it. But, if there is no obvious in-your-face option (in Site Settings), things tend to get forgotten. I have to admit, I forgot more than once. Also, knowing to upload a file/doing it versus having a simple setting to upload a file (just like the logo for example) is what user experience is all about. By that logic, we could dispense with a lot of the site or host settings and just edit web.config or the db directly. My vote is FOR such an option, especially since it would have helped me complete a step, that I forgot.
