I helped a DNN user this weekend who has a site hosted as a parent portal by his hosting provider.  His site was loading slowly, more slowly that it should given the type of content and modules he was using.  After some testing and tuning changes, it bacame obvious that the host had an issue and not just his site.  He emailed his host a list of suggestions I gave him to help speed his site up, including removing modules that aren't used.

The reply from the host was that they had all the core modules loaded and a large number of third party modules as well.  I had suggested that this particular site only needed about ten modules loaded, but the host has over 80 modules loaded to meet the needs of other portals.

So, lesson learned - Other portals on the same DNN install can slow your site down dramatically.  The good news is that the host is more than willing to work with their clients and move portals to a different site if needed.  Unfortunately, their business model is running DNN on portals from fewer installs rather than give each site its own installation of DNN.

We allways give the customer its own installation and its own SQL db ... otherwise how can we separate customers and have different versions of modules installed? one client can have a module that is not complient with another one .....

I think most hosts do the same as you do Johan, this one just happens to be a local hosting service catering to real estate agents.  I'm pretty sure they have limited IP addresses and are not currently willing to get more.

There are situations, where multiportal installation for different cliens makes sense - e.g. if all are needing about the same features. Any SME, which only wants to be able to update some content on their homepage will be glad to use a shared hosting offering all out of the box DNN features and want their sites hosted with as least effort as possible, will be fine with DNN.

Agreed, I would never run a serious website on the same DNN install as another portal. I learnt my lesson the hard way...
