I agree with chinmi - the core needs to sustain itself or we'd all be out of work.

Having said that - I can't justify spending $2000 a year - as a self-employed, one-man band all my eggs are in PokerDIY succeeding and $2000 is just too much money (for now). Obviously the licensing is relying on corporate DNN users who think nothing of spending 2k for security, but for now I am going to have to stick to CE and hope for the best.

Perhaps the licensing needs to cater for corporate and personal users if there are going to be feature differences to make it affordable for all. I was a Silver support for a few years and have always supported DNN in many different ways but a big cash lump sum is just not one of the ways I can help.

Totally agree Rodney, I am in the same situation unable to justify $2000 a year. I must admit I was hoping for something more like Expression Engine pricing for DotNetNuke PE (see http://expressionengine.com/overview/pricing/) with support while CE would remain free with no support. Unfortunately it was not to be but I still think the $2000 asking price is too steep for small businesses, maybe a SBE edition is required :)

Professiaonl Edition is aimed at big sites where $2000 a year is nothing.  You happily pay the $ for the support and web farm caching.  CE is still the perfect choice for 90% of DNN projects, its the 10% (that i usually work on) who need the extra features and the support.

Yes, but more and more features will start being introduced into the PE version - not just webfarm/caching and support. I have a fairly big site (40 000+ users) but it doesn't generate enough revenue to justify the $2000 price tag a year, ie. my point is: Big Successfully site does not neccessarily equal big corporation or big $$$ to throw at it.

Well I can claim I've won the petition fight - double the amount of signups in favour of Pro being part of the ecosystem (I have a massive 8 people signed up)... famous last words :).

Good discussion...  I'll be happy to take the CE as a "light" version that lags in the feature curve and then quote my business accordingly.  Pardon me for bringing up the obvious, but I expect to pay for something of value.  Let's hope PE lives up to its price point and CE catches a few good scraps along the way.
