I downloaded SQL Server Express 2008 and SQL management studio express. (i.e. the free versions, not visual studio)

I have a .bak file of the database and all the files from my root directory.

For some reason I can't find where to go from here.

I've read about queries... but I don't even know where to type them.

http://www.sqlservercurry.com/2008/02/restore-bak-using-sql-server-2005.html

I tried to install SQL management studio express several times but there is no link in my Programs Menu for it.  Is it something I can do from visual web developer?

Anyone know how to do  this?

if you install SSMS, there shall be an entry in "All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server", otherwise there are prereqs missing - installlation is not straight forward; especially if SQL server (xpress) is installed on same machine. you do not need VS to run your site.

Thanks.

To get SQL Server Management Studio express installed, I just uninstalled all SQL and visual web developer programs.... and then used

Microsoft Web Platform Installer

to reinstall everything. Now, I have an icon and it seems to have installed properly.

Will try to restore database now..

I was able to reinstall everything and restore my database from a  .bak file using SQL Server Management Studio

I changed my web.config and it connects to the database.

I changed my portalAlias to be "localhost"

I open default.aspx in visual web developer and try to view in Browser.   It just gives a blank page.

When I go to localhost/default.aspx  I get the following error:

XML Parsing Error: no element found
Location: http://localhost/default.aspx
Line Number 1, Column 1:
^

Any thoughts?

This sounds like ASP.Net 2.0 not to be configured poperly for your web site.
