Hello Taki,

sorry to hear about your problems, but we would prefer for you to deal with legal matters outside the forums -we cannot allow posts that name companies that may be involved in potential litigation for legal reasons.

basic faqs

poll

dynamic site map

search engine

comments module

message board module

announcment and comany news

blog module

photo and video gallery module

they are charging me +6000$ solely for module development

I'd appreciate a response,

Thank you

Taki

It's hard to say as there are often many versions of modules e.g. whilst there is a core blog module there are at least a few other free blog modules as well as a few commerical ones (note: you can see the list of modules shipped with dotnetnuke @ http://www.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/125/default.aspx )

However, your problem isn't whether or not what you're paying is the right price, it's simply the price you agree to pay. Unless your contract explicitly states newly developed modules you've no legal come back - and even in that case it's easy (and perfectly legal) for a company to take a free module such as the blog, rename it and add a little functionality and charge what they like. There are many companies who charge large dollar amounts for DotNetNuke, and there are others who give it away for free (and make their money from customisations and support) - both methods are legal and valid.

In general you've little way to know what is a "fair" price, other than to get multiple tenders for the same contract -some companies will simply try to calculate what your budget is and make their estimate come in close to that, others will be more honest in their estimates.

MT, based on your list it is hard to give a response that will match your situation.  Your requirements may not have matched the core modules and the company may have needed to switch to paid modules.  Whether the company chose to use core or paid, that is still not the end of the work.  Even though it is not "development" in the coding sense, configuring a module (especially a complex and powerful one; Dynamic forms comes to mind) and then getting its output to match your new site's design can still have a significant amount of work-hours.  $6,000 is not that much if you are in a market where designers or developers are getting paid $50 to $100 an hour.  I could go on for quite a few paragraphs on related topics, but lets leave that point as is.

The simple truth is the only people who can make you feel better about your purchase is the company that you are currently upset with.  If you turly feel you have been cheated, you need to take a mature business approach and first sit down with them and go over the quote in detail.  It is very likely they can explain the hours and how they equate to the various dollar amounts quoted.  But be mature, do not go in convinced you are right and trying to prove them wrong.  Let them explain things.  If they cannot explain things to your satisfaction in a reasonable amount of time (limit the meeting to 45 minutes), then consider your options.  If you have a signed contract or agreement - read it - you may not have any options beyond proceeding and learning a lesson for the future.  If proceeding is the best choice, then your new goal is to get maximum results on your project - being angry or upset or accursing them of scamming you is not a very good approach.

Keep an open mind.  Based on what you have said so far my gut tells me that if you are not careful, you may end up owing them an apology.  For their sake, I hope they deliver you a good to great quality project.  Good luck - Jeremy
