It seems to me that no body is willing to help me, is there some one to help me out.

I am new to DotNetNuke and I wanna develop my own membership provider so that we can authenticate and authorization from our local data base.

In version 4.0.2, how can I use another database to hold the user information while still using the membership functionality in DotNetNuke. I have already looked at the Doc that comes with dnn. I cant seem to see how to switch to another data store.

Please tell me from where i start and please forward any useful link or any step by step tutorial or any forum link

Is this possible.

thanx in advance

You might recognize it.

From one of your posts in that thread you are saying that you don't know much about programing and yet you don't want to use the application the way it's provided for you and you can't pay for custom work.  To me it sounds that you are a little over your head.  :)

Maybe a more creative way of thinking about your problem will help.  I've sometimes found that what my boss doesn't know doesn't hurt him as long as the end result is a functional product that does what is required.  Instead of writing a new membership provider how about porting the users in the other DB to the DNN DB?  And then keeping them in sync?

Not to sound calious or anything but from your posts it does seem that you have a pretty weak understanding of wat it really is that you are trying to do.  That's going to put a lot of the people that could help you off.  Mainly because it would be so time consuming just to get you up to the point where you would understand the answer. :)

Really you have four options.

  1. Use the application as provided and explain to your boss it's a limitation that you cannot get around right now.
  2. Find and buy a module that provides a custom membership provider.
  3. Hope some kind soul will write one for you and not mind all the support that would come with it.
  4. Take some time and read some books about databases, asp .Net, VB and DNN. And how they relate to eaach other. Then take a shot at writing something on your own.

Well Adeian its my mine posting i recognize it.

I think every one here is to make money, these forums do not truly represent open source project, except  core team members, who are doing development and sharing it with the world other wise all other developers are getting benefits from it and making money instead of sharing their work or finding with the whole community (which is a not true open source  thing)

Well for Membership Provider, core team is developing an API which will help the developers to make their own custom provider, but I think I take a month or so to complete this API.

Correct me if  I am wrong, it is just my finding  about membership provider.

Hi there hashmipk2000,

Yeah I kind of know what you mean about this being an open source project abundant in pay modules.  I think there are two reasons.  Partly it's what I call the Microsoft effect, the tools to write the code are not free like with other projects (this has changed a little now) and everything around MS seems to cost something.

The second is DNN has become really popular.  There are thousands of posts here everyday with people helping each other out for free and LOADS of modules and skins that have been made free for the downloading.  I don't know his web site url but find a post by Cathal and go to his site.  He has a page that is almost endless with links to free resources.  There is a much greater proportion of free modules to pay modules.  Skins seem to be a little different those darn graphic designers.  :)

I personaly am having a blast helping out trying to answer questions and fix problems for people. But some times helping someone is more pointing them in the right or better direction, not just writing a bunch of code that they really don't need.

As I read your posts I was getting the feeling that you really didn't understand what you were asking for or why it would be much harder that I was thinking you knew to do what you were requesting.  I was trying to point you in a better direction to help you out.  And I didn't charge you a penny.  :)

Open Source isn't really about Free vs Payed. It's a distribution model nothing more.  There are big projects and small projects.  I develop in Java also and use a free IDE called netbeans.  The tool it's self is free and open source, if I wanted I could download the code and change it and give it to other people.  It's core team is infused with cash from Sun and IBM and the netbeans core teams full time jobs are developing netbeans.  Nearly all of the free plug ins and addon for it come from big software companies.

The DNN core team might get a little bit of money from Microsoft but I doubt it and there are ways to get the IDE for free and remain legal but most of the people writing the modules and the core team all have other jobs that pay the bills.  Almost all of the modules and providers you see out there were written on someones free time when they could have been playing with the kids or outside getting some sun and fresh air.  I'm amazed that there are so many posts here in the forums with people helping out and as many free modules as there are.

Good luck and Cheers,  :)
