I'm discussing a possible new volunteer project with a local community activist group in my home town.  They have a basic web site (a single HTML page thrown up by a graphic designer using Dreamweaver), but they'd like to expand it into something that would really be much easier to manage in DNN.  Unfortunately, they set their site up on GoDaddy, and I don't know how much hosting they've paid for.  I'm capable of setting up DNN from scratch myself; the group doesn't seem to have any eCommerce plans; could I reasonably expect to rebuild the site in DNN on GoDaddy and maintain a single portal displaying text, links and photos with maybe half a dozen authorized content managers?  I'm trying to judge how hard I should try to push to move the site elsewhere.

Before making a recommendation to the group I would find out exactly which plan they have signed up for - quite likely it is a linux based one with MySQL as the database server. If that's the case then I recommend you look elsewhere as they would have to change plans/servers anyway. If it is currently Windows server with MS SQL and they have paid in advance for say a year, I might consider doing a DNN installation there. Make sure that 1) control panel allows you to set your own folder permissions (or GoDaday support can promptly execute a ticket request for permission setting) and 2) you have backup/restore database capability and you can directly access the database using MS SQL Server Management Studio or an equally capable web-based tool provided by GoDaddy. I would also confirm that their Windows server plan includes ASP.Net 3.5.

I faced a similar situation with a NPO that already had a simple html site on a different budget host. In that case the NPO had paid for hosting 2 years in advance and wanted to stay witht he same host who did offer a good deal on changing to their Windows server plan. In the end it worked out OK - except for the fact that their ASP.Net worker process is set to time out after 5 minutes of inactivity and they won't increase it to the typical 20 minutes. Hope they like the site getting pinged ever 4 minutes.

Thanks very much for the advice, I'll make a note of your suggestions and see what the contract situation is.  I've been supporting a ZenCart site for some time on CrystalTech, which lets me set folder permissions but not file permissions, and it's annoying but workable.

There is nothing wrong with GoDaddy as a host and you can easily create decent DNN sites there.  There are limitations accroding to what type of hosting is purchased, but that's true anywhere.  You just need to live within the restrictions of the host.

GoDaddy is a good host if you plan on doing all the troubleshooting on your own.  I had several problems that were eventually figured out to be GoDaddy's fault.  Everything from not configuring my account correct to not knowing how smtp relaying works.  The problem I encountered was that, as a whole, their staff just didn't have the ability to troubleshoot anything that wasn't on their script and didn't seem interested in trying.

One of the problems that I had was configuring smtp for DNN.  GoDaddy couldn't figure out that the smtp server was not configured for smtp relaying.  I couldn't get the support staff to listen to what I was saying and kept blaming DNN.  I eventually loaded a basic ASP .Net page that sends an email to my account and had the same error show up after that they didn't know what the problem was.  I had to spend more time trying to help them figure it out then I should have.  It eventually ended with a conversation along the lines of well it is DNN and if you don't like that answer then take your business else where.  I took my business elsewhere about 30 minutes later.

That unfortunately was just one of my experiences with GoDaddy.  They claim to support DNN, and they allow you to load the software, but if there are any problems you are on your own.  I didn't appreciate they way they handled support calls and in general I didn't feel as if I were paying them but more that I was an inconvience.
