I have a job I started and think dnn may be the a big help here. We have custom sites going up for various events like speeches and conferences. The dev team is thinking how to build an extensible and reusable platform so they don’t have to keep making these one off sites from scratch. They were thinking to develop some reusable parts but I am thinking to instantiate and configure dnn sites and customize them as needed.

Thoughts?

It's a steep learning curve, but otherwise, yep you're onto the right thing here.

When I started, I looked at many options - even though of building a CMS myself.  Nonethelss DNN helped me solved lots of issues.  The learning curve may yes, be steep but with so many documentation around - and with so many people in the community... the learning curve becomes flat.

We had the same issue about 4 years ago, we were creating a lot of custom websites however the core was always the same. Everyone needed a login, contact form etc etc... So we started looking for a platform where we could use to develop sites faster. We tried a lot of CMSs however we decided to go for dotnetnuke, and we never looked back.

We developed a lot of web applications, with the help of dnn and our application builder (DotNetMushroom Rad) and other modules we found on snowcovered we build a lot of different web applications e.g. A online quotation system, an online school result system, e-shops etc.

One thing i need to mention is the fact that some developers or web design companies have the wrong idea about dotnetnuke, that it is not designer friendly. If you see the list of skins available on snowcovered and some websites designs out there. You will definetly change your mind.

Here are some examples:

Example 1

Example 2

Hope this help

Regards
