Hey all,

I just wrote up an introduction to a new development feature I discovered coming in DotNetNuke 5.2 over on the Engage Software blog. Check it out if you're curious.

Easily Create Simple Modules or Module Prototypes with DotNetNuke 5.2

In the closing of the post I voiced a "with great power comes great responsibility" type of concern. Take a look and let me know if you think that it is a reasonable concern or not - may just be that the convenience benefits of the feature outweigh any potential foot shooting. We'll see!

Take care,

Ian

Hi Ian.

Yes, I suppose, this new feature is very useful to prototype custom modules. What is missing/desirable to have additionally are IMO the options to define test page name, test page's parent page and should test page be shown in the main menu or not.

Together with the existing feature allowing do get module setup package from test site the new feature you described forms almost complete minimal environment to create and to prototype new modules.

Thank you.

  • please be aware, that this option is available to host users and on localhost only (according to the presentation at OF EU).
  • for security reasons, I would prefer to have this feature as a separate installation package, which may be only installed if needed.

OK.

I must note that feature would be useful to have active for host users on outer Internet (live) servers also - then it would be possible to create "mockup modules" on live server, put them on proper pages and later on replace them with real implementations. Currently I have to create "dummy HTML mockups" while prototyping my customer DNN application on live server. And later on I will replace these "dummy HTML mockups" with real modules and for that I will have to:

- 1) delete "dummy HTML mockup";

- 2) install real module;

- 3) put module on proper page.

In the case of having DNN 5.2 Module prototyping feature working on outer Internet sites I'd be able to eliminate step of creating "dummy HTML mockup" and step (1) listed above, and I'd have step (3) done while creating real module mockup...

Thank you.

Hey Sebastian,

I went ahead and updated my blog post to explicitly state that the feature in question is only available to host users who are running locally. I think in the original blog post I just assumed that piece of information - but I don't want there to be any ambiguity about who has the ability to use this feature.

This definitely strikes me as a feature that has a narrow set of acceptable usages and another set of usages that could be pretty damaging in an inexperienced users hands.

Maybe a separate installation package helps to alleviate the concern. Were you thinking the whole "Create module from : new" feature should be a separate package or just the "view source" option? I think having the "view source" option available only for those modules that were created on the site would be a good happy medium/starting point.

There are always going to be people who need more or less - it's the job of the main distribution to try to give people just enough though.

Take care,

Ian
