I've been looking at dedicated server deals and found some quite reasonable, without an OS installed.

Being with the MS WebSpark program I have the Windows Server 2008 licensed... which I thought could prove useful here until I ask the hosting companies.

So far they've been telling me the servers can only have their own Windows OS installed due to a licensing agreement with Microsoft.  Have any others encountered this?

Seems to be a useless offer to smaller businesses that are unlikely to host their own connection yet can't make use of this on a hosted connection.  Are all ISP Hosts in the same boat, or just the ones I've been finding?

Hi David, my host is a WebsiteSpark hosting partner, and what I got from them was a new server preinstalled with Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. But if your host isn't a partner then I think you're counted as "self-hosting", in which case according to the program guide you also need to sign up for something called SPLA Essentials. And work out how to get the OS installed on the server, of course!

Non-websitespark hosts can't use your Websitespark license because they are signed up for licensing in a different manner.  The license isn't useless, it's good at any Websitespark host.  But then, even if it's useless, you did get it for free...

What benefit are you looking for from using your own Windows license than renting a box which already has Windows? Are you getting a better deal from renting an empty box?

You can also colocate your own box and put on it your own Microsoft software. I don't believe the ISP is bound to a licensing agreeement with Microsoft in this case?
