Certain modules that I had spent a lot of time configuring and building into a site plan turn out to be invisible to Google. Two of them, Bonosoft Multi-page Content and Free Resource Directory have been a particular waste of time to me. I'm just very pleased that a friend checked this issue recently and pointed it out before I went any further.

So, whats the deal? What allows or disallows Google to index a module's content?

Thanks heaps for any info on this,
Rob

I think part of it is how the modules deal with querystring and form parameters. I may be wrong, but I believe that Google shouldn't have a problem as long as the page you're browsing to does not use an additional querystring (after friendly URLs come into play, that is). Friendly URLs try to take care of this, but some modules use additional parameters without turning the URL into a friendly URL. This is where your problem comes into play. It's not a DNN issue, but a module issue. I suggest you contact the individual module developers.

Ok cool... I've gone and done that and sat it out for a while.... and in best open source fashion, the developers have likely got themselves proper jobs now and no longer respond to any emails or forums posts regarding the modules.

I'd still like to know if there is a way to fix a module that does this or at least figure out if a module is flawed before muying it and going to all the trouble of testing it?

When I examine the url for the one module here.. Bonosoft Multipage Content, I can see that the additonal pages have ?PageContentID=2 , 3, 4 etc after them. Does Google not index a page just because it has that? Seems pretty mean.. the web is full of pages like that... meh

The other bad module has url's like this: ..... tabid/63/rrcid/1/rrscid/5/rreid/2/rrpid/1/rrepp/5/Default.aspx

I'm going to look at dnnstuff aggregator as an alternative to Multipage.. I hope it fares better.

I haven't done much in the way of search engine optimizations, however, I don't believe search engines take querystrings into account. The latter URL you provided should be fine, tho, so I'm not sure why that doesn't work.

The only thing you can do about ensuring the modules work as you want is to contact the vendor/developer. The problem comes into play when you have so many one-person shops. DNN has a lot of that running around. There aren't usually companies, but developers backing products. Established companies usually provide better support and hopefully better tools. But that's a whole 'nother topic.
