mm as far as i know off i dont see any real performance issues. Have special http modules running on dnn portals doing 30000 pageviews a day and no issues there, all behaves wel and all pages render  in like  6/10 of a second or more but all within a second for the most content rich pages.

I hav done this i dnn4 but I also managed to get dnn 3 sites validating just had to be carefull which custom module you would use and if i had to use costom modules i usually rewrote the part that uses a grid to use a repeater so i could generate vlaid html table structures
