@Brian  Will said in the Active Modules forums that all of AS features were going to be in CE. It was just a matter of determining which features are going to be baked into the core framework and which features were going to be codeplex modules.

@Scott  Thanks for the info and thoughts.  I think the main question that is still outstanding is what happens between now and then. Many people don't think it is fair to continue charging for these modules on snowcovered when they will be free in the future. This is especially true for people who have license fees coming due between now and then.  Yet another factor is that it could be a pretty long time before AS/AF are finished being integrated into the core - so making the modules free in the mean time would solve the fairness issue but also reduce the inevitable "Are we there yet?" questions that will no doubt arise. And we know how much everyone likes that question.

The above depends somewhat on whether there will be an upgrade path - which is the other big quesiton.   I understand that it has only been a few days since this took place but maybe you could share some thoughts and maybe update us periodically until you can announce what the final decisions are?

Thank you!

@Greg - Thanks for the feedback.  We are looking at ways to satisfy the different stakeholder requirements regarding the transition period until AS/AF are fully integrated and migrated to CE.  As for upgrade path, that is something that will happen.  It has been a core principle for the platform for the last 8 years and is something that we are aware is extremely important to our customers.

Thanks for the info Joe!

I'm afraid, however, that one of your comments may have re-ignited an earlier question I thought we had solved.

When you say "Fully integrated AND MIGRATED to CE"  does that mean some AS/AF features will be PE only for a time until they are migrated to CE - similar to how the RAD Editor was?  We already know about the possibility of the AF mail connector being PE only. I think what most are wondering about is the AS module and features.

@Greg. First you tell me Will says everything will be in CE then you ask the question again. It's not difficult. Not everything will be in the core. I'm almost certain when they say core, they mean core + codeplex modules. You are being too naive. Migrate means from standalone AM to part of Core/Modules. Even AM has 'core' programming to it. That will get migrated and probably be APIs. Again, it's been clearly state most (subjective) will be core (CE) and some will not (PE).

Not sure how those see this as great for the open source Dotnetnuke. It was great before...

Large parts of a DNN extension with a good reputation is being relicensed with an open source licence. Integration with the core. Available on codeplex. This is great news for DNN CE. How can that be bad for the CE?

My worst nightmare would be a cheap closed source "light" version sold to thousands of hobbists with no support contract. Hords of them flooding the forums looking for scraps of info and screaming murder for their broken upgrades. What would that do to the brand? The price for the PE is right, or maybe on the low side if you compare it to other competitors. Paying customers get quality support with the package. The corporation has finally found a viable business model. No reason to mess with it.
