Hello

I have recently started investigating SEO and related concepts, and I read that pointing multiple domains at a single IP can damage your rating within search engines (for duplicate content). This makes sense, and I unwittingly have a couple of domain names that I bought (rodneyjoyce.com etc.) pointing at my main www.smart-thinker.com site because there's nothing else to do with them yet.

So I did some more investigating and found that in order to not damage your ranking you need to do a permanent 301 IIS redirect to the main site. I then found this URL checker, and ran www.rodneyjoyce.com (which is a portal alias) and it says it is spider friendly. Does the DNN core have a 301 redirect built into the core for all portal aliases, and if so, does this mean pointing multiple parked domain names as a single domain will NOT harm the ranking?

Here are some links I found interesting:

and the URL Checker I used:

Now thats very interesting!

I added another domain name (DNS server) and ran the Friendly Redirection checker BEFORE I added it as a portal alias, and it was friendly (and loads up suprisingly).

Then when I ran it AFTER I added it as a portal alias it was no longer friendly (and hence could have a negative effect on site ranking).

Hence is it better to not add extra domains as portal aliases (assuming they still work?)

Hi Rodney,

I have received the same advice about multiple domains pointing to one IP address... the reason my client's SEO company gave was that more links to index reduces the relevancy of your content.  For example, if "http://www.mysite.org/", "http://www.mysite.org/Default.aspx", "http://mysite.org/", and "http://mysite.org/Default.aspx" all point to the same page (pretty common with DNN), AND you use all of these links on different pages on your site or in links from other internet sites, then the content on that page may be bumped down in the search rankings.

That said, I use a FireFox plugin called "LiveHTTPHeaders" to see exactly what type of redirection is happening for my sites.  It shows that DNN uses "302" redirects, which just signals that the object has moved.  "301" type redirects are supposedly more search engine friendly, signaling a "Permanent Move".

I don't have any real experience that proves a site ranking is negatively affected when you add portal aliases to a DNN site... but I would imagine it is true, especially if you link to the same content using many different URL's.

sorry for the uppage but this is the problem thats affecting me at the moment.

i have a .com and .co.uk address that are set up as portal alias's to the same site. and this 302 problem. HOW can i get round this damn 302 problem without access to IIS?

in desperation.

Hi Colin,

I am still trying to work out what it SHOULD be doing. The way I see it is that 302 redirects are NOT SEO friendly, even tho some of these tools say it is. The bottom line is that it is not a 301 Permenent Redirect HTTP command.

So from what I understand, this means that having multiple DotNetNuke aliases would harm your site's SEO ranking. I would think the simple solution would be to have the ability to assing one of your portal aliases as the prime one, and then the DNN core code handles the 301 redirect on all the other portals.

Does anyone know if this is possible? Could a core team comment on the portal redirection code and why a 302 was used instead of a 301 please?
