Hello All,

My programmer that installed my DNN to my site is not availabe, and I am trying to figure out how to:

1.  Get the password for the HOST account

2.  Then, reset what email is attached to that account, or reset the password for starters

When I log in as the ADMIN, I do NOT see HOST as a User Account?  How can I get this information, your help is greatly appreciated!!!

The default Host password is host.  If your programmer changed it (as he should have), you'll need to find him.

Depending upon the encryption settings, you might be able to go into the database directly and read the Host password from there.

basically the only way I can see at having a quick look at the DNN3/4 code is to mod the PortalSecurity.vb code to bypass the actual database check on the password - this may or may not work. I think you can change the email address directly in the database using enterprise manager or the like. This most probably would be the best approach - change it to yours then get a password reminder sent to your email address for the host id.

I don't have much to do with the code of V3/4 but I am sure that some one out there can point you in the best way to edit the database to change the email - however this would be a direct breech of DNN security and any one that suggests the solution would need to some how certify that you actually own the site. I would assume that if you have access to the database userid and password then you could say you own the site.

if you have not added much content to the site then the fastest way is to reinstall the site.

Unless whoever installed it changed the default encryption settings, it's encrypted and will be very difficult to recover the password.  I'm thinking it would be a good idea to include a method to reset and/or recover the password for accounts.  This would allow for the unfortunately not uncommon scenario when the person with the host and/or admin account password leaves (is fired or otherwise leaves on bad terms) and such knowledge transfer didn't occur.  Possibly a store procedure.  I don't think that this would be a very big security hole.  By the time someone got access to run the sproc they'd be able to do just about anything they wanted anyway even without such a sproc.
