Hi Folks

I am updating my documentation to match DNN 6's new interface but I am not sure of the official names of the various elements.

For example, the Drop Down Control Panel or Ribbon Menu for Administrators or SuperUsers at the very top of the skin is replaced by a toolbar. What is the official name of this toolbar?

Likewise, the Module Action Menu is replaced by a transparent Manage button. What is the official name of this button? And does it open onto the Module Action Window, if not what should I call the new pop up window?

In other words, has anyone produced a marked-up diagram of the Dark Knight skin with the new names for its parts, or a glossary comparing DNN 5 and DNN 6 elements?

We'll know it all when the books come out, but until then has anyone blogged this, yet?

Kind regards

Hello,
I don't believe we have an offical glossary anywhere (though probably the wiki glossary page is a sensible location - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W... ), but I can certainly tell you what we refer to these internally and in our design docs.

The control panel is just called "control panel" or occasionally "ribbonbar" as that's it's technical name -its technical name remained the same in 6.0 even though the implementation changed.

As for the manage button we just call it the manage button :) but usually still refer to it as the actions menu. As for the pop ups no offical name I'm aware of beyond pop-ups.

At the moment the 6.0 versions of the help documents are being finalised - i would take whatever terminology they use as the offical usage.

Thanks.

Thanks Cathal

The more I use the new interface, the more I like it. Great job.

FYI we're starting to document the form pattens we used on the wiki - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/User-Interface-Patterns-and-Conventions.aspx . The 6.0 developer documentation is also worth a read - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/DotNetNuke-6-Developer-Quick-Start.aspx

Hi Cathal

Thanks for those additional links. I am sure the Wiki is the best place for the glossary.

My  software is a toolbox of 14 modules. It comes with one hundred pages of documentation that include over 150 screenshots that need to be updated. So I would sure like to do it right first time.

The Developer Quick Start in the Wiki illustrates my dilemma. Under the heading Control Panel it says "The 'Ribbon Bar' control panel that was included with DotNetNuke 5.x versions has been heavily updated." Now I'd say that what we have is neither a Control Panel or a Ribbon Bar but a Toolbar.

This isn't just nitpicking, it matters a lot if one of the aims of 6.0 is to make the DNN interface simpler and more intuitive.

An obvious example: perpetuating both legacy names of Host and SuperUser for the same thing is sure to confuse newbies.

Just my viewpoint. :-)

I do like 6.0 very much.
