I am developing a new DNN site for a client and keep getting SQL timeout errors which I just cannot find the cause.

They are very random and I think something is going on in the background that is making this happen but I just cannot find it.

The site is still in development and I am the only person using it so I am very worried that when the site goes live it is going it get worse very quickly.

I need to find someone who has experience with DNN and SQL specifically who could help me track down the problem.

I know this is might be considered off topic but I dont know where else to turn.

If you think you might be able to help then please PM me with your contact details.

I am will to pay a little for help as I am really stuck.

Thanks in advance.

Nathan

Nathan,
Intermittent connections suggest network issue. What sort of configuration do you have? One machine with both IIS and SQL or two (one web head and one SQL box)?

Hi Steve, it is a PowerDNN hosted account. So it appears to be one box using SQL express (or whatever MS call it these days). From what I have seen I am not convinced it is network related because when I see the site stop if I try and connect to the SQL server remotely it times out for the same period as the DNN site does. I have pasted below a list of index fragmentation of any that are over 40% but I am not that hot on MS SQL so not sure if there might be something relevant in what it is saying that might be contributing to the problem. Thanks.

please check for big tables with many entries, eventually you might need to truncate some of the log tables (sitelog, eventlog)

Sebastian, thanks for your reply. The sitelog is set to 0 and the event log is truncated every night using the IOWA module (cant remember is name). I also have the backup I do every night shrink the database the way you recommend by taking the recovery mode into simple etc. Is their any way I can run a profiler over the SQL server or a module/plug in I can add to DNN/ASP.net that records SQL times so that I can see which table etc the issue might be related to. I have read (remember I am not super hot on MS SQL as mySQL is more my thing) that their is a Profiler for MS SQL but not sure where I can download this and if it can be used remotely with PowerDNN as I do have access to the MS SQL db etc.

Do you think the list of index fragmentation looks an issue (as I know it would be in mySQL) or am I looking at the wrong thing.

Thanks again.

Nathan
