We have developed a very customized portal using the DNN Framework (DNN 3.2.2). We are registering users, using their email address as their username, which obviously also populates the email address field. The profile edit page is custom as we store a lot of extra details about the user.

To my horror (now correct me if I am wrong) you cannot update the username if it changes; because this is a restriction of the Membership Provider used by DNN provided by Microsoft. Now the typical scenario (which 1000's of websites implement is using your email address as your username; I honeslty don't like the separate username and email address thing anyway). Now what happens if my email address changes (which obviously requires an update of my username)? Are we just completely screwed or do we now have to delete the poor user's account and re-create, linking back all relevant data with a brand new UserID. I cannot think this is so; or am I missing something here; a fundemantal flaw maybe?

I haven't received any replies, but quite a few viewings to this post. Quite strange; does anyone know of a user who used their email address as their username and then their email address changed? How did they update their username?

How do you get past this issue???

It seems so. Before I take the awful route of deleting user accounts when their email address changes and re-create the account (which is so stupid), I want to confirm this. I cannot think that this is the solution.

well.. ATM there are 2 options:

* create your own membership provider to deal with this situation

* you could change usernames making use of some home made sql statements... (or create your own module to handle the sql)

cheers,

Erik
