Hello,

I'm sure some of you have seen the new roadmap page at http://www.dnnsoftware.com/community/learn/roadmap -this is a work in progress, but one thing I thought worth public debate is what version of .net we should be taking a dependency on next year. We recognise that we have to move forward, so .net 4.5 is a sensible jump, but I think that perhaps 4.5.1 is a better option as it introduces the support for app suspension and multi-core jit (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/magazine/dn574802.aspx ) so many sites will benefit greatly from that.

If I look at 4.5.2 the benefits aren't as dramatic (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dotnet/archive/2014/05/05/announcing-the-net-framework-4-5-2-release.aspx ), but I noticed Microsoft posted a blog last week about future support (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dotnet/archive/2014/08/07/moving-to-the-net-framework-4-5-2.aspx) , which suggests to me that we really should target 4.5.2 as the new dependency.

Rather than argue about this behind closed doors with other Corp employees/MVP's, I thought it would be best to post my thoughts and see what people think -is moving to 4.5.2 the right idea or too soon? Would 4.5.1 be better and then move to 4.5.2 a year later, or is anything more than 4.5.0 a bad idea?

Comments welcome!

Microsoft published that 4.5.2 will be supported for a longer time, i.e. this should be easier to maintain for admins and Hosting companies, however, AFAIK it hasn't been generally rolled upt via WUS and WSUS yet.

The intent is to do this as part of the DNN 8.0 release in Q1 of 2015.  This is still a good 6 months away so there is plenty of time for this to come out on WUS and WSUS.

Both 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 are in place upgrades to 4.5. Which means they shouldn't have any breaking changes but instead, bug fixes and performance enhancements. So why not go then for the latest version?

So my question is why you want to upgrade to 4.5.2 later than now? What's the concern?

Tony, the question is whether we may require 4.5.1 or 4.5.2 now for DNN - as users on shared hosting usually don't have control over the .net version installed on the server and would be unable to upgrade.
