my main concern is finding a good place for docs and examples. I know they use something called DAL2 and I find a lot of blog posts saying how great it is, but very little to no"getting started with" type information.

is there a forum, wiki, web site that has this or at least a community of developers to learn from? the dotnetnuke.com forums are not too good. questions dont get answered. evey posdt is moderated. the dnn subreddit is dead.

can someone point me in the right direction?

Savio,

welcome to DNN!

The question is: what do you want to do? Creating web sites and integrating solutions for customers? Creating skins (themes)? Creating modules or other extensions for a customer's special purposes? Creating modules and sell them in the store or publish them as Open Source?

As you mentioned DAL2 I guess you are a programmer. DAL2 is the implementation of PetaPOCO in DNN. When you want to code, you should have some ideas of ASP.Net Webforms (which is still the basis for DNN), ASP.Net MVC and slowly move towards ASP.Net Core. You should know about SQL Server as it is the underlying database for DNN.

There are Visual Studio templates to start with (even if I prefer to start from scratch), There is a Wiki here, and there are videos in YouTube. And of course, as DNN is Open Source and is underlying some rapid changes sometimes - the documentation is always a bit (or more) behind.

The advice I can give to you: Familiarize yourself with the basic concepts: portals, pages (tabs), modules, themes (skins), containers, permissions, languages (locales), data access etc. etc. Try, fail, learn, try again.

Happy DNNing!
Michael
