Hi,

I've previously installed DNN3 for my company's intranet site but is currently considering using DNN4 for a non-profit website. However, one of my main concern is if I were to opt for DNN4 for the new website and have it hosted, what would happen when a newer version comes along later?

Do I have to upgrade my site to the new version? If so, how easy is it to upgrade without losing all the information and configurations?

If I don't have to upgrade to the newer version, would there be a risk that the hosting company may not support older versions at some stage? I'm just wondering if anyone who uses Version 1 or 2 have any problems, now that the latest DNN version is 4.

Hope I've posted this on the correct thread. Last but not least, great work to the DNN folks!

Cheers!

You would never have to do an upgrade, the only exception might be a security issue (such as needing to upgrade from 4.3.3 to 4.3.4).

It is pretty easy to do an upgrade.  Here are some notes I saved when I recently did my upgrade.

You will never lose information if you take care to backup the database and backup all the files and folders.  I know this first hand because I have had to do a restore.  This is pretty easy.

What the hosting company has to support is ASP.net version 2 (if you want to install DotNetNuke Version 4.3.4).   And they would have to continue support of a database you are using, such as MS SQL.  I can't really imagine them ever quitting that support!
So they don't have to support DotNetNuke, just database and .Net software.
