I my experiences with this error these are mostly caused by either:

  • relying on the cache to store an object (seemed to work most of the time in .NET1.1, doesn't work in .NET2.0)
  • Using the  DAL++ (the execute SQL thing, wich does not throw errors when it should)

I have never encountered this error when using only the core and core modules, these where always 3th party modules and 90% of casses, it was the caching issue.
You could find out more by attaching a debugger to your site. Please do so and report any weird values.

On our dev server it works fine, it is only on the production hosted server where we get this sporadic issue so not sure we can do anythig nto debug it there.

This is the core DNN 4.3.4 with no custom modules.  Only non core element is the skin being used.  Tried different caching setting but didn't seem to make any differences.

You can set debug=true and attach the CLR debugger(included in .NET SDK).

I agree It's hard to do that when you can't really reproduce.

There must be a difference between production server and development.

I'm sure that dev and prod servers are different, one is our in house server, the other is a third party hosted shared server.  However whatever the cause it seems to be related to somethign DNN is doing and is very sporadic.  Any ideas what the function is trying to access that is causing the error?

What happens when you go back to the stock plain skin?
