Some questions about alternative dataproviders (just curious)

1. Most alternative providers will support the standard modules, but not third party modules?
2. If you would want to use one of these modules you would have to create a new dataprovider for it?
3. What is the reason that there is a Firebird provider project and not a MySql project? Just the fact that some people started it, or are there other reasons?
4. I think a lot of afford has been made to make DNN DB independant, but does anybody have any idea how many people are using other providers?
5. Anybody any experience with the (commercial) MySql provider?

Thank you...
(MSSQL is the only DB I ever used)

Timo,

Let me take a stab at your questions:

1. Currect, most providers are written for the core (DNN) only. That being said, cooperation with the provider to port certain modules may be available.
2. Covered in #1, but yes, an new (non - MSSQL) data provider would need to be written for each module you installed.
3. It was started because Micheal Washington felt a need for this provider, it has evolved over the last year or so into the project you see now.
4. No clue on this one...
5. No, but I did use it when it was a project started by Geert Veenstra (Core Team).
