I am currently thinking porting a site to DNN. I asked our regular "WWW host" what was solution they recomended to host a DNN site. They replied that they have very little information about it and asked for more information in order to help them help me ;).

My question is: do i need special hosting in order do deploy a DNN solution? Can i simply "buy" a normal hosting solution windows based?

I'm new in this hosting thing, and i greatly apreciate your help.

Thank you.

You'll need Windows hosting with Asp.net 1.1 support, or Asp.net 2.0 support. You'll also need SQL server for your database.

Chris has stated the basic hardware requirements for DNN. The other thing to consider is your own experience in managing the site, as you say you are new to hosting.
DNN does take some knowledge if you don't want to be pulling your hair out if something goes awry. The community is good at help but it is still going to take some time to get a response. You will want to be happy that you can fix/ troubleshoot simple issues that may occur yourself. This may involve editing things like the web.config and or database.

Can you please point me to some good docs or book about this subject?

Thank you very much.

Good starting point are the docs that come with DNN/ on the DNN site incl help.dotnetnuke.com and then the books done by the core team, bear in mind these are more targeted on HOW to use the Framework. A good understanding of 'how to' also is a good base.
With SQL if you are a beginner I would start with a Dummies/Idiots guide and then build up to one of the WROX books, also see if you can get on any courses maybe at a local college.
These Forums are also a good source of knowledge, you can get RSS feeds for most of them.
I always find though that once i have done some reading the best learning comes with Hands on use. If you are lucky and have a spare PC you can set this up as a web server on your own local network, install SQL Express/MSDE and dnn and start playing. If you can take a disk image once you have it going that can be used to restore the server if you trash the box. If you don't have a spare PC, use something like Microsoft's Virtual PC to create a server. Again back up the virtual disk once you have it working so you can 'return to start'.
Use the test/dev server to try out changes you want to make to the live site before you change the live one then you should find out about any problems in a none critical environment.
The more hands on time to reinforce book learning the better.
One thing we do is also keep a notebook/wiki in which we record bits of useful information for a bit quicker access.
