I am looking at putting one of my sites back to DNN. We used DNN 2 years ago and ran into some issues and abandoned it. We installed a test site over the weekend and the glove still fits but the interface has gotten a nice facelift. From a few hours of testing, I have a few questions:

  1. How to you organize pages by categories so when site navigation is generated, pages appear as desired?
    1. Reviews
      1. Review 1
      2. Review 2
      3. Review 3
    2. Interviews
      1. Interviews 1
      2. Interviews 2
      3. Interviews 3

But I do not need a tab / page called Reviews or Interviews. Any easy way to do this?
  2. Can we do a common portal Navigation; a main set of links, and propogate that down to all sub portals?
    1. Main
      1. Forums
      2. Blogs
      3. Photos
  3. Can we hide tabs from the navigation until they are selected within a grouping? I can do this now as before, with a child portal. They have their own navigation. Can we achieve a child Navigation and not go to child portals?
    1. Departments
      1. HR
      2. Payroll
    2. HR
      1. Benefits
      2. Career

When HR is selected, bring up this menu (b) at the same level of Department? If I do child portals, the departments would be part of the Main in #2, and as one is selected, the departments nav would be generated. I am trying to check that I don't go down the path of dozens of child portals because I missed a way to do this in the navigation tree.
  4. Has anyone done an import from CS, or its open source predescors, asp.net forums, .text or .gallery?
    1. Not looking for an importer ( if it existed great) - but any info on degree of difficulty. I looked at the table structures and it seems very doaable tabl by table, column by column

Thanks for any responses. If the answer is yes or better yet a link to a functioning site that would be awesome

I will try to answer some of this from what little I know. First of all I think this thread technically should be in the Skins forum.

Organize pages by categories:
When you create or edit a tab, there are several choices in the configuration page that you should pay attention to:
In your scenerio you would want to create a tab called Reviews, Another called Interviews (i.e. Top level tabs) and on those pages do not put a value in the "Parent Page" field.  For each of the review pages, designate "Reviews" as the parent page.
Likewise with the Interview pages.

you can make the top level pages act as menu items only by checking the "disabledd" box in the settings page of that tab.

you can arrange the order that the tabs appear from the "pages" tab under the Admin Menu.

I am pretty sure that you can suppress submenus as well - though I have never done this.   There are parameters that you can set int he skin.xml file to allow two menus on a page and set the level that each menu begins to display the tabs.  you will have to create a set of skins with the appropriate menu skin objects to do this.

There are several alternative menu providers available that may enable what you want.

Thanks for the response. I wanted to make certain I did not go down the path of many child portals if I could achieve the level of seperation with a single site. When we left DNN before we had a need for the rights contorl in the seperate portals which over time has become no longer a requirement
