Hi All,

I am trying to create a community website which basically allows users to contact each other and search profiles, upload images etc.

I'm sure this must be possible using DNN434! but none of the core modules seem to provide that kind of functionality. Does anyone know of an example of such a site using DNN.

Also does anyone know if there are any good commercial modules available that could provide what I am looking for.

If anyone knows of a solution using the existing core modules within DNN434 please let me know. I think that this kind of functionality, given the current popularity of networking sites, would be a great add on for DNN.

Many Thanks!

Hello,

There's a couple of modules that may help.

The Smart-Thinker modules are primarily designed for this type of community building - I am about to release the next version of the UserGroups module and I modelled it on MySpace's Groups implementation.

You can create public or private groups, search by group category or free-text tags, join public groups, invite others to join private (or public groups) and then add Groups to Events as invites. Integrating with Scott's (Ventrians Private Messages) you can send PMs to a group (this is like a MySpace Bulletin).

The next version of the UserProfile module will lean towwards MySpaces users - youcan currently see the profile picture but I want to make some nice little controls like "Cool new users" on MySpace and do some more work with sorting. I am adding tags to everything so users can categorize data, and letting a logged off user do as much as possible (without violating privacy) without needing to log in (this encourages visitor conversions).

I think the Smart-Thinker Events module is way more advanced than MySpace's one (new version is about to be release too). All of these modules integrate with the Smart-Thinker UserProfile module so you can click on a user's name anywhere to see their profile.

For a personalized page for each user check out the Smart-Thinker HomePage module.

Check out PokerDIY.com to see it all come together. PokerDIY is a social networking community for live poker. I will be uploading the new Groups module this weekend (tripled in size) and it will be a little clearer where it's heading...

Hi,

Thanks for your reply! Interestingly I just downloaded ventrians messenger last week. It's a great module. I like the look of Pokerdiy, its very clean. I will definitely have a look at your modules. Do you have online demos?

Given the popularity of community sites at the moment I think whoever produces the right modules to create a 'Myspace' type site with DNN should do very well!

Thanks!

Yes, all modules can be tried online, and you can download a trial version for free and test it on your own portal for all the 4.3.x + versions of the modules.

I hope to release the Groups module by tomorrow... (with trail download)

Hi,

I am actually a registered user of your site already. I have downloaded the profile and homepage mods to give them a try. I look forward to trying out the groups module.

One question..Do I have to configure any special settings etc for my DNN434 site before I can use the Modules?

Regards

Malc
