users usually get unmoderated, when the contributed a number of posts and the moderators have the feeling, that they can trust the user.

Besides I expect, that the nex version of the forums will allow for quicker moderation and ask you for patience. This is a volunteer project supported by a number of people committed to, that is continuosly improving - but due to limited resources not over night.

Couple of quick points:

  • There is a known bug in the forums which means that occasionally there are posts in a forum's moderation queue, but they don't show up - this is the most common reason for delays. This bug will be fixed in the next release - i believe it's 4-6 weeks off from release (dependant on resources/testing naturally)
  • Personally speaking I check the forums at least half a dozen times a day, and rarely find more than half a dozen posts in the moderation queues. Last time I checked we were averaging 300-500 posts per day, so i honestly feel the main problem is the bug i mentioned, and not the dedication/number of moderators
  • part of the reason for moving here was that moderation on asp.net was substantially longer - many people did not notice as they were already unmoderated, but we had people mention waiting for days for posts to be released. Over time more and more people will become unmoderated here, increasing average speed to answer
  • Personally speaking I frequently check the aggregated forum, but only read posts with no answers, or interesting subject's, missing many posts I could answer. I think the addition of the ability to mark a forum post as closed/answered will help ensure posts don't disappear.
  • Once the wiki project goes live, we intend to use it to detail common questions & answers. This should cut out many common questions, hopefully meaning swifter answers overall (reducing the "signal to noise" ratio) - as well as hopefully supporting other languages.
  • So far today I've deleted 7 spam posts, 3 or 4 duplicate posts, and moved 10+ posts from the announcements queue to their correct forums. That's quite a high percentage out of the posts I've checked, so IMHO we still need a level of moderation
  • we do have a rough figure in mind for postcount to allow us to unmoderate (though i and other moderators use our judgement to decide, and often unmoderate people very early due to quality of answers/helpfulness/recognising them from asp.net forums). In real terms, the postcount here needs to be less than 10% of what the old asp.net forums ran at for the first few years.

May I chime in?

The ASP.Net forums made a distinct sound - that of air whooshing into the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner. There were lots of complaints concerning the search facility and the fact that we were severely limited in the number of sub-forums available.  Moderation was slow - sometimes it literally took days. 

Now we have our own forums, and although the change took some adjustment I like what we have.  The core forum module is improving over time as well.

We might want to look into letting unanswered posts simply get deleted after a reasonable amount of time... if a post isn't an anouncement and goes unanswered for say 30 days, why not let it fall out of search returns?

OK, I didn't know this, I guess it would be nice to have some guidelines around this, maybe it would encourage more new users to reply if they know that eventually they will become unmoderated.

In terms of delay seeing responses, not sure if it's related to the bug Cathal mentions but I know yesterday it took over 2 hours until I saw my posting, by which point the post had dropped off the aggregated view.

I understand that fixes take time and I don't want to make this sound as a critisicism to the project, I thing DDN is great.  I was just trying to question whether or not we are being too restrictive on users which in turn hampers the adoption of DNN to new users.

I agree with most of your points. Why receive an email telling you that you have posted and then that your post is accepted? The fact that you can have an email sent as soon as thre is a reply is a lot more usefull.
