I think this has to do with the fact that DNN has problems remembering login.

Good point.

I think it is also because the Users Online shows them long after they are gone.  If any anonymous user clicks on an online help link from their DotNetNuke website, then leaves right away, it will still show them online for at least 20 minutes by default.

It's very likely that the "guests" are actually search bots. I judge by my site: google wouldn't leave it alone for 5 minutes straight, and other search engines are no better. :)

1)  I too have been quite frustrated with the forums.  I joined the ASP.NET forums about 4 years ago just for the DNN section (v1.0.10?).  I eventually became unmoderated.  After being unmoderated for quite some time the forums switched locations.  Now, it's just feels like a waste  to post anything time sensitive.  I use to visit the DNN forums every day and make a point to to try and answer something.  But, now I'm lucky if I show up here once a week.

2)  Also, as another poster mentioned, the search functionality is weak.  I typically resort to searching through Google when browsing for the forums.

3)  Another good point was made.  The formatting of the forums tends to interfere with the content.  The visual presentation of the information is much less intuitive than the previous forum or most forums in general.

4)  All that said, the people that post on DNN are great.  They're the best asset to the product.  If they could be set free from the moderation delay, these forums could really shine.

I know I tend to push this idea a bit but there is a lot of good info within the forum posts however it is just a bit hard to actually extract it - if the forum post table was exported and made avialble to some of the developers out there ( including me) then maybe we could come up with a knowledge base for all the standard type questions asked. To actually design such a system it is better to start with the data available then to sit down and think up a design. The outcome would be a knowledge base on all those how do I do this type questions. The wilki project is one way to do this but I think a true knowledge base system would be better. Once setup it could be linked to the forums and via a question and answer interface continue to build the knowledge base or if needed pass the request to the forum.

a bit of thinking outside the box type approach. It makes it much easier if there was access to the forum posts to be able to analyse the types of questions asked and of course to build the answers. Takes a bit of design time , a bit of programming time and a fair lot of computer time to analyse - I have a bit of the first two and a lot of the third. A good system could also link off to gemini as the need arises.

any takers
