I am implementing my DNN at a provider Site. The provider offers a preinstalled DNN, acess to the Database (Creator Authorisation) and FTP acess to the DNN folders.

I would like to be able to make a backup of the DNN System and copy it to my local computer. Through FTP I have access to all the DNN Folder contents.
I can also connect to the MS SQL Server through the MS SQL Management Studio Express and access all the data or start a backup (which results in a backup file on the remote computer). The problem is that the provider can/will not allow me even read-only access to the backup files, which I need to have a complete backup of my DNN system.

Does anybody know of a utility which could extract the whole database and recreate it on the local computer, given acess to the Database on the server but not to any files of the remote system.

Thank you for any info.
Regards Ciki

I'm not sure if I understand your problem, but  I will try... Why do not create backup on your DNN folder? Then you can transfer bak file to your computer. Example for backup with SQL statement:

BACKUP DATABASE <database name> TO DISK = '<path>' WITH INIT,SKIP

where <path> is path for one of your DNN folders

Hope this helps,

Primoz

I think SnowCovered sells several back up modules that can be used to take a backup of a site and restore it to another location.

good idea, but the sql server and my web site are not on the same physical machine. As far as I am aware, you can only specify a local disk for <path>. I am afraid that any procedure which requires using a file produced on the local SQL server machine, will not work for me bacouse I will have no access to it.

If nothing else works, I could live with a system that simply copies all the Database data content of the remote database to an enpty predefined database on my system The structure of the Database will remain fairly constant.

Ciki

Ciki,

the old SQL Server Enterprise Manager has "Copy database wizard" (right click on database>all task>copy database...) but I'm not sure for express version...

Primoz
