Hi!
The question has probably been asked before but as the search function doesn't seem to work I'll ask it again.

Is there a way to use mySQL with DNN? The reason for me asking is that I'm just putting up a simple site (to check DNN out and see what it can do) and the cost of using ms-sql is simply to great where I live. I've seen forums/portals that use access DB as well (for small sites of course), is this something that DNN supports?

/S *who frowns upon the search-function as it won't really search*

there is a commercial mysql provider, but you have to bear in mind that most (read all) of the available third party modules will not work with mysql.

Access is no longer supported (last support for access was with dnn 2.1.2, over 2 years ago), however, you can use ms sql server xpress 2005, which is also free

there is nothing wrong with search, you just have to know how: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=dotnetnuke+mysql+provider

The out of the box install package uses MS SQL Server Express and requires practically zero configuration.  It is free.  Simply download and install it first, and then install DNN.

Yes, it is "free".  But, if you already have an established MySql installation and the requisite experience, installing and using SQL Server express just adds an additional support headache.  It really would be nice if there were built in and tested MySql and PostgreSQL data providers in the core package.  I do understand the development headaches from a core developer perspective, but considering the installed base of these two open source databases, this is a valid question, so just saying the SQL server express is easily downloaded and installed is to ignore the fact of current installations and expertise in the user community.  Besides, after fighting to get to use an open source database and then having to go back to your management and ask for a new server just to run sql server and dotnetnuke, it's a bit of a stretch.

In the original post it looked to me that the stated goal was to set up a simple site to try out DNN, without needing to spend money.  The easiest way to do that is with SQL Express.

I was not saying there is no need for a mySQL provider.  I think it would be a good thing actually.
