Then I'd say go for it. As long as your insulated from potential compatibility problems you should be OK.

Thanks again for your input.

Shawn -

My installation has one portal only and will always have one portal. I'd be interested in seeing out how a custom role provider could be built, I have no idea. I've managed to get authorisation working across multiple apps by making web.config values the same, such as cookie and encryption keys, but what's attractive about this is using DNN to manage users/roles that will be available in the other applications.

Is there any way you could rig something up without core mods, giving the fexibility to upgrade the core and retain this level of cross-app control?

Steve - I agree it is much more palatable to avoid core mods.  I have not given up quite yet trying to do just that.  One way to avoid core mods is to create a custom role provider for your .NET application (assuming .NET 2.0), however I believe that path does expose security vulnerabilities.   If you are concerned with a secure solution or your external app is 1.1 the only viable way is my method.

While core changes will require a new version of my product for every upgrade you wish to do, I think the price point I am  tentatively planning for will make it pretty much a non issue.  It will be quite reasonable.

For anyone who has been watching to see if I have an update, the wait is over.  I have re-designed my implementation and now plan to offer the product as a module, as I really should have done in the first place.  No core changes will be made at all.  Further updates on progress will be in my blog.

Thanks to everyone for their interest and input.
