I have developed a way to allow users to log into DNN once and then have that authentication shared with 1.1 and 2.0 ASP.NET applications (no separate login required).  It involves customizing core DNN code and an additional piece of code for 2.0 sites.  Setting it up and configuring it is pretty easy and would only take 5 mins or so.

I would like to gauge if there is any demand for this as a commercial offering.  I was thinking of naming it "AuthNetNuke".

If anyone has any feedback or input I'd appreciate it.

Hi Shawn,
This definitely sounds like a valuable solution.  I'm curious as to why you may need to customize DNN code?  We implemented a solution for a customer that uses DotNetNuke as the main entry point for several applications.  DotNetNuke handles all authentication and role management.  We were able to implement this by simply modifying the web.config files for each application and creating a custom ASP.NET Role provider.  This allows us to use all of the same roles from DotNetNuke within the ASP.NET applications.  This was all done without making any changes to DotNetNuke.  It's extremely difficult to offer commercial solutions that require core changes.

Thanks,

Will

A custom role provider is viable for ASP.NET 2.0 apps but not for 1.1 apps, which my method works with also.  An interesting security consideration comes into play in multi portal scenarios.  Does your role provider take into account child portals that may contain roles of the same name, and prevent users of those portals from gaining access to the app?

I do agree that having to distribute modified core code makes this less attractive.  Perhaps to the point where people don't want it.  I am still evaluating other options.

Shawn -

I'd definitely be interested in a 2.0 version that doesn't require any core mods. I have a few external apps that I want to integrate into DNN and let DNN handle security and membership.

thanks,

Steve

Hi Shaun

Will it be possible to share users/roles across multiple portals. If so i am very interested.

Please give us some details.

Thanks
