I got the joy of flying several hundred miles to attend a 3 hour IBM Portal sales demonstration for my parent company. The presenter made every feature seem like the greatest thing to happen to a website since Netscape. The amusing part is that most of those features already exist in DNN.

  • Role Based Content (oh my!)
  • Inter-Portlet Communication (gasp!)
  • Document Management (how revolutionary)
  • FAQs Portlet (The presenter was so dramatic about how this would save us money by relieving the burden on our helpdesk system. I laughed out loud.)
  • And much much more....

I groaned, rolled my eyes and chuckled during most of the presentation. The problem is, everyone else in the room was amazed by Portal. Since I was not invited to speak, there was no opportunity for a DNN demonstration. Hopefully, I can convince the PTB that DNN is just like IBM Portal, without all the overhead or cost. Money would be better spent hiring developers, not paying for upgrades every year. And Java, yuck....

Comments welcome.

Is the IBM portal new? I thought they'd had WebSphere for quite some time. This type of thing has been out since at least '99 hasn't it?

Yeah, it's been rebranded as "Portal". The one thing that it did have going for it is the prevelance of Ajax in all the modules, or portlets as they call them.

If you can't get the PTB to bite on DNN, then you should at least try to nudge them towards JBOSS Portal.  Since JBOSS has a complete Open Source stack that is fully supported by RedHat/JBOSS, then you can get all the "goodness" of IBM without the hassle.

Having formerly been CTO for a company that developed an app generator and IDE for the major J2EE platforms, I can tell you from first hand experience that the WebSphere stuff is a major PITA.  My developers hated every minute they were forced to write for WebSphere.  It is totally non-standard and a very closed system.

We do have it set up and it seems to run pretty slow. The content management process seems bloated in my opinion.

I was asked by one of the PTB "Who else is running dotnetnuke?" I had no answer to give. The IBM rep spouted of some really big companies. <sigh>Name dropping seems to make a larger impression than anything else.</sigh>
