I have two parent portals off of one DNN installation.

On portal1 I created a user called user1 w/ password pw1 and this is the default portal.

When I logged on as the SU onto portal2 I tried to create a user name also called user1 with password pw2 but get the message:

"A User Already Exists For the Username Specified. Please Register Again Using A Different Username."

I thought if you had 2 parent portals on a single DNN install they had separate user databases???

Yet, if I try to user user1 to logon to portal2 it does not work but I can use it to logon to portal1.

Sounds like a Catch-22.

Can you or not have same named users on multiple portals on a single DNN installation?

Thanks, Dave

Usernames must be unique over all portals within DNN. You should be able to register User1 with pw1 in your portal 2 though. DNN will treat the user as the same user, with access to 2 portals. If you try to use a different passwor, you will get an error: it is not possible to have one user with 2 passwords in the same installation

That's good to know. And that at least the user can be used on another portal if the same pw. Thanks!

I do think DNN should support compl;etely separate user collections on each portal unless perhaps a portal choses to share or inherit a user database with another portal. Future enhancement request...

Thanks again. Still learning the finer points, Dave

I agree with this; DNN has done a poor job of defining its users/portals relationship.  Currently exists a hybrid between a single-sign-on database and separate-sign-on databases...   but single sign on itself does not work; and profiles are not shared...  There is a problem (or was - around whatever version was 6 months ago) with one user logging into multiple portals using the same username and password relating to the user changing passwords; if a password was changed in a certain combination - a user could get locked out of one portal but not the other...  the bug was obscure enough that only someone deep in an attempt to create a single sign on solution would ever find it.

There are other problems with the single sign on implementation that exists - and I ended up having to completely re-write the membership, profile, and roles providers to provide the single sign on service that I needed.  If you have questions about what they are; search for other posts that I have made under this username or my previous username: mr17hz

if you not already did so, please add these enhancement requests to gemini. You may have noticed that we are working very hard at cleaning up gemini ...
