GoDaddy told me there is no way I can do a backup/restore on my database. I have requested they enhance their SQL Server manager to allow this. They did offer to do one for me for free but this is not adequate I feel as it might not be timely and surely they would tire of doing so if I had to do this several times while testing or building a multi portals isntallation. Would also likely allow more timely or more accurate restoration should the database get corrupted.

If you use GoDaddy please ask them to support an enhancement to their MS SQL Server control panel to allow a backup/restore to/from a .bak file anywhere in the hosting directory.

This also allows porting a DNN site to/from GoDaddy a lot easier and without their help or fees.

Thanks, Dave

Yeah, GoDaddy has crappy support tools... but I run a free DNN module that backs up my database every couple days.  I'll have to look it up and get back to you if you're interested.

Oh, I asked GD about doing this for me as well, and although they will backup for free - if you ever need a restore, they told me it will cost $100 fee.

GD told me that a restore was $150. I opted to buy Evotiva's BackupScript for $50. It allows me to backup the database at will or scheduled. It also backups the Portals and other directories you specify. If  I restore, or refresh my localhost, I have to reinstall the basic DNN first, but then I can easily restore. Of course I must tweak web.config and Portal Aliases if I'm moving the instance/

I use it regularly for making my development system match the production before I start a new project.

I have found GD's crazy directory permissions and not allowing the web server to have RWE on the root, bigger problems than their backup policy.

Yes I could never get around a root install either but installing into a /DNN subdir seems to be working fine.

I was hoping folks would send email to 'support@godaddy.com' requesting them to add backup/restore to their SQL Server control panel.

I thought about using .Net code to backup but you have to have certain permissions and unlikely they allow these so did not try yet.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Dave
