The Events module has the ability to populate a Parent Events module from one or more Child Events modules.

I am currently working on a portal for a company intranet site where it would be really useful to be able to populate a parent Announcements module from multiple child modules.

To provide an example, I would envisage having the parent module displayed on the home page of the intranet portal. Various departments would then have their own child modules on their own department pages.  When the child modules on the departmental pages are populated the Parent module would also populate.

In addition to this it would also be advantageous to ensure that viewing privileges for the announcements would carry through from the child to the parent. As we have multiple sales channels in our business, an announcement for one sales channel may not be applicable for another. Therefore if an announcement was posted for the retail sales channel, in an announcements module that only the retail sales channel had viewing privileges for, when the parent module was viewed by a member of one of the other sales channel groups, the announcement would not appear.

And finally, within the setup of the child modules, it would be advantageous to specify how many announcements could appear on the parent module. With 7 seperate departments along with 6 seperate sales channels, if each was able to publish 10 announcements the parent module would be overloaded with information. By limiting it, it would provide the ability to ensure that the content level is managable.

I would be keen to get some feedback on this idea from users of the announcements module and also from the members of the project team.

Thanks.

Do the project teams actually view the posts on the forums related to their projects?

Welcome Adrian to the world of DNN! I'm sure you will find that this is a fun, friendly and helpful forum community - in fact I have often heard comments about just how friendly the DNN community is especially for newbies. Yes, project teams as well as the wider DNN community use the forums regularly to both communicate with one another, and to offer advice and assistance. I'm guessing you have a question which remains unanswered and that is the point of your post. P Thanks for sharing your concerns. I'm sure it will be answered soon and please bear in mind that all DNN project team members perform their DNN work voluntarily inbetween work, family and playtime which may be the cause of the delay which is concerning you.

The feature you describe has been privately discussed. Can you enter the suggestion in the public Bug Tracker?

Hi Adrian

Look for a news articles or announcements type of module that will put out an RSS feed and use that to aggregate the posts to your homepage. Browse around Snowcovered.com or the DNN market thing here and check out the various options. RSS will cover just about everything you've mentioned.

Having worked on Intranets myself, I can tell you you need to put some serious effort into choosing a flexible and futureproof module, seeing as a lot of people will be putting a lot of their work through it in the long run. Take your time to test a few modules out, because they vary a lot in the details whilst appearing very similar on the surface. Simply being able to upload an image along with a post and not have to resize it beforehand offline can be the make or break difference for your end users. That function is the one item that virtually every module developer fails to address, yet is paramount for just about every web content publishing scenario.

Regards,
Rob
