Can one of the project team give us a description of what is planned for using parameters to filter report content?

I'd like to be able to enter a value for one or more fields to filter the SQL results via a text box before runing the report and outputing it via any of the visulaisers

So for example, if the SQL returned a list of users, we could type in a first name and run the report and only get back the matching users

The long-term plan for Parameters is to provide an extensible system which allows you to add parameters which pull data from numerous sources. One of these will be a Text Box, Drop-Down, or other control on the View page. In fact, the plan is to allow developers to create their own "Parameter Sources" just like they can create Visualizers now and Data Sources in v5.0.

So, your example is a primary use case for us and will be supported when the Parameter system is developed. At the moment, there are a few other modules which provide an extensible parameter system (XML/XSLT and IFRAME for example) so we're trying to do this in a way that allows us to share code, rather than using copy-paste.

Any idea on a trimeframe on when this will become available?

At this point, no. The DNN Core is, currently, not very supportive when it comes to modules sharing code. If we can't solve some of the issues soon, I'll probably start improving the current system to include support for parameter entry by users as a stop-gap solution.
