This is my first post, so be gentle ;-)

I have looked at DNN as the basic framework for a web site to do with fish. It seems to be able to handle everything I need, with one major exception.

The primary aim of the site is to enable registered users and visitors to look up details about a given fish species, genus, family or whatever. The database contains around 80 tables, of which around 10 are the most important. This includes fish species, photographer names, authors, publications, photographs and so on. I can create a database in SQL Server with all this stuff, including the names of the files containing the photographs and thumbnails.

I have looked at the ASP.NET Dynamic Data stuff, and it looks vaguely promising, since it can automatically generate all the list and edit pages on the fly. A lot of the code examples are only in C#, so I'm not entirely convinced that I will be able to control the appearance and functions of the generated code to meet my requirements, but it's worth a try.

I also looked at IndooDNN but it seems that I will have to create the forms for each table by hand. This is not good. Perhaps I misunderstand, so I would be grateful to hear from any IndoDNN users.

So my question is this:

If I use dynamic data to generate all the database pages, how do I link them into the rest of the DNN project so that the menu navigation works, and the appearance is maintained throughout? Stitching the two together seems to be a non-trivial task.

Alternatively, is there any DNN module that will allow me to maintain pages of 80 tables without doing it all by hand?

Any advice would be most welcome

I have the exact same question.  How can I create pages from an existing database?  My site will around 700 different pages that need to be dynamically created and populated from an existing database.  Creating these manually is unthinkable.  Can DNN support dynamic pages?

If you use a module to display data from an existing SQL data source, this module needs to provide navigation, either List and Detail or by a separate navigation list or tree, dropdown or whatever. DotNetNuke framework currently doesn't support inmodule items to be added to the menu structure.

I have done some work with DynamicData when it was in an earlier form:

(NOTE: That code is outdated and does not work with the latest version of Dynamic data)

The Dynamic data team made a lot of changes after receiving feedback from myself and others. They did a great job of allowing you to incorporate dynamic data into an existing website.

The challenges that have to be overcome are:

* Creating the data context in a place other than the global.ascx
* Handling the URL routing that instructs dynamic data on what to show (DNN has it's own URL formating that gets in the way).

A few weeks ago I sat down to get DNN to work wit the latest released version of Dynamic Data and got stuck on defining the data context at the DNN module level not the Global.ascx. It probably can be overcome but I ran out of time and would not get the time until next year :(

Create custom module. There is no way in DNN to do like that. CMIIW.

Or maybe you can export your pages into excel document spreadsheet, then by using custom module (again, custom module) to import into DNN.
