Hi, I am not new to DNN but new to DNN development, I have a bse knowledge of vb.net and have developed a couple of small windows applications.

The problem I have is that I want to sell my digital assets online these are rights managed photographs, so I need to develop something like a custom DAM (Digital Asset Management) module with ecommerce, I have looked at the out-the-box offerings and nothing comes close to the requirements, but there are standard modules like the store module that could be extended and some new modules developed to interact with these.

Just some background so you can see where I am coming from, when I sell a Photograph I sell the licenced rights to use it, this then becomes a "Licenced Rights Managed" asset, for this sale I would need to record the following data:

  • Image use (Advertising), Details of use , Image size, Print run, Inserts & Placement
  • Starting date & Duration
  • Territory,  Country & Region
  • Product industry & Industry details

When uploading an image there are a number of other attribute that need to be recorded like, No of People, Model Released, Property Released, Editorial, Cut-out, Exclusive, Licence Type etc:

So my real qusetion is if I download the source to use one of the standard modules as a base how would I do this, if I wanted to use say the store module and call this photostore what would I need to do?

I did come across xMod but was not sure if that was suitable, any advice is welcome, links to other information, suggestions of modules that I might not have found.

There are many thousands of photographers that are poorly serviced for suitable standalone ecommerce solutions the nearest is a product called LightBoxPhoto  at over $1000 but that is out of my budget so I want to invest some time in DNN programming to see if this can be done.

Unless your time is of little value - I would suggest you think carefully before considereing embarking on a development project to replicate and improve on a $1000.00 product.

What people often forget is that - the amount of effort that goes into developing a program of any sort tends to far outweigh the cost of a boxed package.

But regardless ...

I would first suggest that if you dont already have one - get hold of a good book on asp.net web programming - in VB if you are new to programming.

Then spend a whole heap of time here http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/
working thru the various guides to DNN development.

Then you need to go out and do research on tools that allow you to manage images in ASP.NET
especially if you want to add DRM elements to the image itself.

You will also need to get a handle on MS SQL as well - and how to work with databases.
