If I have a need to extend some of the DNN core classes in a manner that these extended  properties can be efficiently referenced by a suite of custom modules, what is the best or recommended method to accomplish this?

More specifically I would like to add some custom portal-level properties (PortalInfo / PortalSettings) as well as add some custom Tab properties (TabInfo). In searching the forums for how to extend the core, I only find references to “creating modules” or “custom providers”.  I understand the need to avoid modifying the core, but if this is the only method to accomplish this, what would be the recommended method to make it easy to apply my needed customizations to future DNN releases.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Les

Les,

I think a bit more context and detail to what you are trying to do would be good.

you do not want to be adding code to any of the controller classes, nor do you want to modify any database tables or anything that serve the core, you put yourself at so much risk it isn't funny.

Hi Mitchel,

Thank you for your response. I do appreciate the importance of not modifying the core. My needs are being driven by custom modules that I am developing.
1) I need some page level property extensions (Tab Settings) that would impact behavior of any of my modules that are added to the page or to any page that is a child of the parent page.  Setting these needed property extensions using "module settings" would create too much administrative overhead and would be prone to error.
2) Similarly, I need some site-level or portal specific properties (PortalSettings extensions) that can be accessed by any of my custom modules.
So I guess I am looking for some recommendation on how to best implement some custom portal-level and tab-level custom property extensions that can easy be referenced by any of modules I develop, similar to how modules currently have access core portalsettings and tabinfo properties.

Many thanks,

Les

I suggest using same option as e.g. page localization modules, which provide an extra admin module to perform settings for all pages of the portal; this module could be used to save some extra portal settings as well.

Les,

You definately want to stay away from modifying the core. (been there, done that..)  I would recommend that you create your own "settings" tables and then create an admin module (or 2) to enter your settings.  That way you are in complete control and don't have to worry so much about upgrades to DNN messing you up. (Which they will & would)
