Hi,

I want to store some variables contents and reset them when user logout or the user authentication expire. I read somewhere that the session variables are not used in dotnetnuke. Is it true? and which the better way to keep in memory these variables?

your information is correct, session variables are not used in DNN, because they are not supported by ASP.Net in web farm scenarios. You may store information in a cookie or use personalisation (see http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/Personalization).

Hi Sebastian,

Can you expand on that statement a little?  I think ASP.Net has brilliant support for out of process session state...

...that leads me to think we must be talkingabout different ideas.  That is why I ask you to expand on why it does not work in DNN.

Session variables work in DotNetNuke, we just choose not to use them as they don't work by default in webfarms. Whilst you can use out of state stores for them this requires that to be setup which is not a common possibility for most sites (e.g. those hosted on shared hosting). In addition, as the out of state store is a database it add's an overhead to each request. There are many other possibilities to store temporary information as Sebastian suggested, which IMO are a better idea.

Under Host Menu I can find  Host Settings > Advanced Settings > Users Online Time, is this session timeout? If yes then session is used by DNN! If no how Users Online Time work?
