When we implemented our DNN site we found the email address required field to not fit the business requirement.  We were in a time crunch and found the easiest way to resolve the issue was to change UserInfo.vb in the core.  We also had to make some minor changes to the user module and forgot password code to accommodate the change.

We looking to upgrade to the newest version of DNN and I would like to get our Core back to the pristine out-of-box version.  Is there another option to changing the core to get the email address required field removed?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

email address is required by the core framework to be able to send system notification, afaik all 3rd party registration modules do require it as well, i.e. your only choice is porting you modification during framework upgrades.

A quick question, hopefully. I want the 'new user/role/updates notification email' at the core/host level to the user, to default to 'off or none', not to 'on'. I cant find any reference in the DNN manuals to a default user notify setting other than 'on'. We had an embarrassing moment when the wrong set of names were bulk imported by mistake and notifications sent out by DNN Core as the upload happened. Very fast but caused some strong responses about privacy! any suggestions? thanks Ken Tombs

I'm not sure how you can bulk load new users without using a 3rd party application.  In that case you would need to speak to the vendor how to disable that feature.

A quick way to disable notification is to set the notification checkbox checked & visible value to false in the ascx file.   This will uncheck the checkbox and hide it so it cannot be turned back on.  One warning with this solution though...it will affect all portals on your install and you will have to make the change everytime you upgrade.
