I have downloaded and installed DNN Community Edition 5.06.01.  I have downloaded the DNN API help file, and have Visual Studio 2010.  I'd like to write a simple c# console app that fetches the portal name for a given portal GUID.  I've Googled and tried to find any examples of how to use the API, but have found nothing. Here's the place I'm starting from, but it won't work because this app has no way to know what DNN instance to interact with, and I can't see how to do it in the API.  Can anyone help me to get to the next steps?  Here's my starter code:

using System;

using DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals;

namespace DNNSandbox

{

    class Program

    {

        static void Main(string[] args)

        {

            try

            {

                PortalController myPortalController = new PortalController();

                PortalInfo myPortalInfo = new PortalInfo();

                string myPortalName = string.Empty;

                try

                {

                    myPortalInfo = myPortalController.GetPortal(new Guid("5319BECE-FEE1-48E3-AD7A-4A8323515E39"));

                    myPortalName = myPortalInfo.PortalName;

                }

                catch (System.NullReferenceException)

                {

                    myPortalName = "unknown";

                }

                Console.Out.Write("myPortalName is: " + myPortalName);

                Console.In.ReadLine();

            }

            catch (Exception ex)

            {

                Console.Out.Write(ex.ToString());

                Console.In.ReadLine();

            }

        }

    }

}

The dnn api is largely focused around a direct association with a live web context.  As such what you are trying to do is not really how the DNN api expects to operate ... if you are looking at accessing dnn infomation from outside a web context  -  in console app or windows up - the best  approach is to configure your console app to communicate with DNN thru web services.

Is a great example of how this sort of system works.- and is ideal as it fully supports DNN internal security systems,
