We operate several portals with different skins on one DNN instance. We discovered that the portals have different document type declarations at the beginning of a pages source code.
One is
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

The other is
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

Where is the setting or the skin code which allows to change the document type declaration?

there is a skin.doctype.xml in the skin folder as well as a default doctype specified in Host Settings.

Thanks Sebastian! I found the doctype-selection drop down field in host settings and changed to xhtml 1 transitional.

If semebody out there wonders why we wanted/needed to change the doctype:

The change of doctype (from html 4 to xhtml 1 transitionl) acutally fixed a problem that we had with the dnnWerk RadEditor. In Mozilla Firefox (Version 11 and 12)  the drop-down lists of the RadEditor toolbar (e.g. insert table or font selection) opened at a wrong position, something seemed wrong with the browser's interpretation of the position:absolute style when the page scroll bar was not at the top start position. So RadEditor was hardly usable (well, it worked on IE and GoogleChrome).

Now everything is fine.
