I've been looking at tutorials for making your own skin and uploading it to my website through DNN, but I can't seem to do it. All the tutorials I've seen so far don't show you how to make an ascx file from your css files.... they go straight to ascx that was provided!

I created a basic website from a tutorial and now I have no clue how to actually make it a skin DNN can understand...

Here is the website, really need help with this.

Hi hglee,

There are allot of companies that will create a skin for you.

If you go to the store of Dnn ( store.dnnsoftware.com ) most of the skin developers offer a skinning service.

Skinning is not that hard to do, in the Dnn video library there is a section called "Design (Skinning)", there is a wealth of informational videos for you there. Have a look at this video, it explains the basics of a skin, the file structure, where to skins are located etc.

To create a skin there are various type of software you can use, we use Visual Studio which is free ( see here ) .

Another good tutorial resource for you is DnnHero, there are video tutorials there for skin creation as well.

I hope this helps you out,

Regards,

Geoff

You will find some superb tutorials on building DNN skins (now Themes!) at dnncreative.com. Please note that this is a subscription site.

Also, you might want to take a look at Chris Hammond's HammerFlex skin. You will find it at Codeplex.com. This is a thoroughly modern skin.

I find that the best way to create a DNN Theme is to start with a good one and then modify it. Chris' HammerFlex is quite usable out of the box, and it's a good one for modification/customization. And, you'll find some blog entries that describe the theme and how to modify it.

Based on your first question - "don't show you how to make an ascx file from your css files".

You dont convert css files to ascx files - they are used together.

The ASCX file is where you place the markup that defines the underlying html layout for you skin and the placement of containers and dnn skin objects.
The CSS file is where you define the styles that this ASCX files will use to format the html layout.
