Is there a way to display the filetype icon with the files in the documents module similar to the "file manager" page,  example a word document icon for a word document, etc.

I would think that would be part of it.  Im using DotNetNuke 3.2.0

Thanks

This feature is entered in Gemini as DOC-1458:  Document Icons.  It is proposed as a feature for the next release.
