I am trying to figure out how to solve this particular problem:

I have a content subscription service in which I allow downloads to paid members.  I want to be able to limit the total number of downloads that a person (role) can access. For instance, I have 100 files available for people to choose from. At one membership level, they can download any 25 that they choose.  At a higer level, they can download 50. The key here is that the membership is based on a total number of downloads.  It is easy to figure out how to limit people to a group of downloads, but I want people to pick and choose which ones they want up to a certain total number of downloads.

Does anyone have any idea if there is a module that does this?  If so, which one.  If there isn't one, is there a "trick" that anyone can suggest.

Thanks!

Hi Kevin,

It sounds to me like you would need some custom work for this.  One way you could do this is to create a security role that allows the downloads, turn on download tracking for all the documents, and write a scheduled task to compare the download tracking data with the number of downloads you want to allow - when the limit is reached, remove the user from the security role.

Anthony,

Thanks for the reply.  I know you develop modules and wonder if this is a project you might be willing to develop.  There are many potential ecommerce applications to a system like this, so I think there would be a good demand out there in the DNN world.  With a module like this, people could offer subscription services for many types of download. Music, videos, photographs, clipart, templates, skins, modules, and many other digital media could be sold using this model.  There are already sites doing this using other applications outside DNN and it would be great to have a good module for us as well.

If you want to discuss this in a non-public forum, you can email me at kevin@fabrizio.us

This is interesting. I would like a user to be able to download a certain document only once. It should also show a disclaimer before a user can download and the user must click OK before they can download. The admin should be able to see a list which users downloaded which documents and the admin should be able to reset download permissions for a certain user and document.

I am also very interested in finding a way to limit file downloads.  In my situation, I would like to limit based on total downloaded file size.  I have a security role for downloads and track each download by user, but I have not found a way to remove them from the role automatically when the file amount is exceeded.
