I tweeted earlier about the great job on B1, truly a nice job by all. I am however a little concerned about the page weight. With no content and stock skin it weighs in about 497259 bytes. With all the branding removed from the portal.css, it's still about  318216 bytes. most of which is JavaScript (171551 bytes). Is this going to be addressed? Maybe minify the js and css?

Chris, the weight you are talking about in terms of javascript and css may be slimmed down some but not much more for 6.0. We have it on our future roadmap to properly address the situation in a future version. As we were doing some trial and error (to get where we are today) we certainly noticed the size became huge and know it must be addressed in the future (we just didn't have the time to handle it now, this requires lots of planning and probably a little trial and error of its own too). Please do keep in mind that a large portion of the js today comes from a CDN, when available.

Thanks for the reply Chris, it's appreciated.  I understand that things of this nature take careful planning. I use certain measures at present to try to keep page size down, such as using a CDN for all skin graphics and CSS where I can. I know there are a number of open source projects that combine/compress/minify JS and CSS files, perhaps that will be my next "free time" DNN project...

Again, thanks for the response,
~Chris

Chris,
There is some hope that we will have time to minify the JS and CSS before launch, but that is a lower priority at the moment to squashing bugs which will have much more impact to users.  While page weight is important, it is a transient issue due to CSS and JS caching.  It is probably more of an issue that we have so many requests for JS and CSS resources and this is another area where we are looking to gain back some performance (most likely in one of the maintenance releases).

Don't get me wrong Joe, I'm in not really complaining, it's more an observation . I completely understand the need to address showstopper/priority bugs first and foremost. That said, performance seems to be a reoccurring theme that I would love to see addressed at the core, where IMHO, where it would be most effective. Personally, I can tune IIS/SQL to handle a lot of performance issues, but I know there are a great many hosted sites without this luxury.
